چکیده

One of the long-standing questions in the syntax and semantics of English is how the CONTROLLER in control constructions is determined, and why it is determined in that manner. In literature, there are generally two lines of approaches to this issue: a syntactic approach based onMinimalDistance Principle (MDP; Rosembaum1967), which states that the controller is the closest c-commanding NP with respect to PRO, and the lexicalist approach (e.g., Chierchia 1984, Dowty 1985) that seeks an account in terms of the specific lexical semantics of each control verb. However, although both of these theories basically assume a dichotomy between obligatory and nonobligatory control, there is actually a control pattern in which the restriction on the controller selection lies somewhere intermediate between obligatory and nonobligatory control: a control patternwhich Jackendoff and Culicover (2003) call NEARLY FREE CONTROL, exemplified in (1).

Reverse Engineering of Network Software Binary Codes for Identification of Syntax and Semantics of Protocol Messages

Reverse engineering of network applications especially from the security point of view is of high importance and interest. Many network applications use proprietary protocols which specifications are not publicly available. Reverse engineering of such applications could provide us with vital information to understand their embedded unknown protocols. This could facilitate many tasks including d...

Syntax versus Semantics

We report on the idea to use colours to distinguish syntax and semantics as an educational tool in logic classes. This distinction gives also reason to reflect on some philosophical issues concerning semantics. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.4.1, F.4.m

Semantics-first Natura rocessi

There is no consensus on how syntax and semantic/pragmatics should interact in natural language processing. This paper focuses on one issue concerning interaction: order of processing. Two approaches are compared empirically: an interleaved syntax-first approach, in which semantic interpretations is performed at intermediate points during parsing; and a semantics-first approach, in which semant...

Empirical Issues in Syntax and Semantics

This paper presents an analysis of the copy construction that explains its similarity to extraction constructions while accounting for its incompatibility with wh+NP phrases. Essentially, wh-phrases without an NP complement can be copied because they’re non-quantificational (introducing only a free variable into the derivation). Whphraseswith anNP complement cannot be copied because thesewh-phr...
